The City of Westminster's efforts to create a thriving arts community in the historic part of the city have received national recognition.
The National Recreation and Park Association recently awarded the South Westminster Arts Group with the 2011 Dorothy Mullen Arts and Humanities Award. The award honors the most innovative and effective arts and humanities programs across the nation. The award will be presented November 2 in Atlanta.
Founded in 2007, SWAG was created to drive the city’s arts initiatives in South Westminster. It has since flourished in its dedication to community service and advocacy on behalf of creative professionals. All of its programs, events, exhibits, community outreach and management structure are part of a growing and evolving creative collaboration.Since its inception, four sound studios, two entertainment venues (Westminster Grange Hall and the 73rd Avenue Theatre), four galleries and five individual artists have located in the area. In addition, the North Metro Art Alliance, 73rd Avenue Theatre Company, Paletteers and SWAG maintain office space within the 10-block arts district.
SWAG provides year-long class programming and studio space in the Rodeo Market Gallery, 3915 West 73rd Ave. SWAG members also initiated the volunteer-based Harris Park Art Cooperative to staff the gallery’s gift shop and present exhibits every four to six weeks.
The Sculpture on 73rd Avenue program was created by SWAG to enhance the artistic character of the neighborhood. The group also hosts the Historic Westminster Arts Festival and the Orchard Festival, featuring a variety of local artists, food vendors, musicians and activiites.
SWAG is a program supported by the city's Department of Community Development. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Libraries, which is a member of NRPA, submitted the application. The 2011 Dorothy Mullen Arts and Humanities Award is given in three population categories. SWAG is the recipient in the Class III division, which matches cities from 75,000 to 199,999 in population.
